If your car just failed an emissions or smog test in Grand Rapids, you can still donate it exactly as it sits. You do not need to fix anything first. River City Rides partners with Heritage for the Blind to accept vehicles in almost any condition—including those that can’t pass an emissions test—anywhere in the Grand Rapids Metro. Whether you’re in Eastown, Wyoming, Kentwood, Walker, or up near Rockford, we’ll handle the entire process for you.
Here’s what really happens with a failed-smog car in Michigan: when you donate, you’re making a charitable title transfer, not a private sale. The smog and emissions rules that usually apply when you sell a car to another driver typically do not apply to this kind of donation. We arrange a licensed towing partner to pick up your vehicle for free. Heritage for the Blind then sells the car as‑is at auction or to a buyer who repairs or parts it out. You get a tax receipt and you’re done—no repair bills, no dealing with buyers, no retesting hassle at a Secretary of State branch.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your failed-smog vehicle
Start online or by phone and let River City Rides know your car failed an emissions or smog test. Share the basics: year, make, model, approximate condition, and where it’s located in the Grand Rapids area—maybe downtown, Alger Heights, Wyoming, or Comstock Park. We’ll confirm it’s acceptable for donation to Heritage for the Blind (almost all are).
2. Stop worrying about repairs or retesting
Once you’ve decided to donate, there’s no need to spend another dollar trying to pass emissions. You don’t need to fix check-engine lights, catalytic converters, or sensors. Because this is a charitable title transfer, the usual smog requirements for private sales generally don’t apply. Just remove your personal items and plates; we’ll take it from there.
3. Schedule your free Grand Rapids pickup
We arrange a towing company to pick up your vehicle at a time that works for you—at home, at your mechanic’s shop, or even from a workplace in places like Kentwood, Walker, Byron Center, or Cascade. Pickup is completely free to you, and the car can be non-running, barely running, or stuck after failing the emissions test.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys
On pickup day, you’ll sign your Michigan title to transfer ownership to the charity’s authorized agent. Our driver will guide you on where to sign. You keep your plates, and we load the vehicle. From that moment, you’re released from dealing with repairs, re-inspection, storage, or finding a buyer for a failed-smog car.
5. Heritage for the Blind sells the car as‑is
Heritage for the Blind takes your donated vehicle and sells it as‑is at auction or to a buyer who specializes in repair or recycling. They handle all resale and compliance details. The proceeds help fund programs for people who are blind or visually impaired—without you needing to fix the emissions problem or spend time marketing a troublesome car.
6. Receive your tax receipt and finalize your deduction
After the vehicle is sold, you’ll receive a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind. In most cases, you can deduct the sales price or at least $500; for amounts over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C with your return. Always confirm details with your tax professional, but we’ll give you the documentation you need to claim the deduction.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect Michigan title
Tip: Even if your car failed smog, we still need a proper Michigan title to complete the donation. If you’ve lost it or names don’t match, you may need to visit a Secretary of State office in Grand Rapids, Kentwood, or Standale for a replacement or correction before pickup can be scheduled.
Existing loans or liens on the vehicle
Tip: If a bank or lender is still listed as a lienholder, we usually can’t complete the donation until that lien is released. Contact your lender first to obtain a lien release letter or a clear title. Once the lien is cleared, your failed-emissions car can typically be donated without any repair work.
Car stored at a shop or impound lot
Tip: If your vehicle is sitting at a repair shop after failing emissions or in a storage yard, let us know upfront. We can often still arrange towing, but you’re responsible for any outstanding storage or release fees. Once it’s released, our free pickup can save you from ongoing storage costs and future headaches.
Out-of-state titles or recent moves to Michigan
Tip: If you’ve just moved to the Grand Rapids area and your car failed a new emissions check, but your title is from another state, we can typically still accept it. We’ll review the out-of-state title to ensure it meets Michigan transfer requirements and walk you through any extra steps needed.
